Children-Phenomena: Young Talents and Their Ways
History knows many examples when, after a loud fame in childhood, an artist, without passing the test of fame or money, practically disappears from the radar of the public with age. And vice versa: an early start and a successful career in the future. There is no regularity as such.
The first concert of Jackson 5 was held on August 11, 1969, in one of the clubs in California under the patronage of Diana Ross. The most notable member of the team was the younger brother, who impressed the audience with his expressive vocals. Of course, we are talking about Michael, whose star was lit when the singer was about 11 years old, and shone brightly until his tragic departure from life. However, today I propose not to stir up precisely his alarming past, but to recall other children whose spontaneity touched us, and their talent, which differs from their peers, surprised and delighted.
American cinema is generally rich in young idols. It is impossible not to recall Macaulay Culkin – the charming bully Kevin from the movie “Home Alone” and the sequel “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”, which became incredibly loved all over the world. Unfortunately, all the subsequent films of the boy, who at that time had already been recognized as the most successful and popular child actor since the legendary Shirley Temple, the audience went with less pleasure. “Richie Rich,” “Get even with his father,” “Page Master” barely paid off at the box office. Macaulay’s father, who was his agent, was much more interested in his son’s fees than in the quality of the projects for which he signed. Which, of course, directly affected the guy’s career.
Since 1993, if there was news about the growing Macaulay, it would be better if they weren’t: addicted to alcohol, suspected of taking drugs, got married, divorced … Starting in 2003, Calkin gradually returned to the industry, starring in various films. Obviously, that mad fame will not return to him – the childish charm cannot be restored, but one hopes that he will nevertheless be at the top again.
Adorable girl, daughter of the famous singer Jeanne Rozhdestvenskaya. Olya was the main children’s voice of Soviet cinema. She was six years old when she performed songs in the film “About Little Red Riding Hood”. Then there were “Sold laughter”, “There on unknown paths …”, “Sorcerers”, the cartoon “Girl and a Dolphin”. From the age of 8, Olya goes on tour separately from her mother, sometimes giving several concerts a day.
And although Olya appeared in the frame as an actress only once – in the film “I Make Up a Song” – the whole country knew and loved the talented artist.
And it all ended as suddenly as it began. Composer Vladimir Dashkevich wrote songs for “Peppy Long Stocking” specifically for Olya, but the director chose another girl. In an interview, an adult Olga admitted: “… it was terribly disappointing. And at that moment I realized: the girl grew up, she is no longer needed, it’s all over. I was 14 years old.” More Christmas was not invited anywhere.
Now, Olga’s musical activity is known for cooperation with the electronic group Moscow Groove Institute:
Probably the first child is a mega-movie star. Jackie was about 7 years old when he became famous, starring in a duet with Charlie Chaplin in the silent film “Baby” and a year later in the lead role in “Oliver Twister.” At 9, Jackie was one of the most sought-after people in Hollywood. The little actor was invited vying with each other, he became one of the first celebrities whose name became a trademark: toys, stationery, peanut butter, clothes, accessories and more were released under it.
But the unique story of Jackie Coogan is not only that. The kid quickly became a real millionaire, but he hardly saw his money. Versions vary. Some sources claim that his fabulous fees were quickly spent by his mother and stepfather on jewelry and expensive cars. Others say that the dad, who got into debt, is guilty. The most neutral people think that this is the sad result of inept entrepreneurship: in order to increase their son’s capital, parents made investments that turned out to be unsuccessful. So, by the age of 23, Jackie was left without education (he was expelled from two universities for poor progress), without a profession – there was no interest in cinema in him anymore, and almost without a livelihood.
However, Jackie’s story set a precedent in American law – indeed, there were no mechanisms to protect what a child earned. And a year after the process, the Bill on Children Actors appeared. He said that a percentage of the amount of the contract concluded with the child is transferred to his personal account or to a savings fund that is inaccessible to parents and guardians. The child himself can manage these amounts, but only after coming of age. Without fulfilling this condition, the employer does not have the right to hire a small actor. So all young, but already rich, should be grateful to Jackie Coogan for perseverance.
