Today Shchukin School celebrates its 101st birthday. This is a theater institute with its own special traditions. Only one out of a hundred applicants manage to get the coveted student ID. Only graduates of the “Pike” teach here – this is a long tradition. Among them are many famous actors. Let’s think today about how to enter the legendary institute.
The Shchukin school began with … failure. At one time it was an amateur theater studio. Unprofessional actors called for the head of Yevgeny Vakhtangov – a student of Stanislavsky and a young actor of the Moscow Art Theater. The first performance of the students was a failure, and in response, Vakhtangov said: “Let’s learn.” So, on October 23, 1914, the studio became a school.
The institute, which was at first one of the Moscow Art Theater’s studios, received the name of Boris Schukin, Vakhtangov’s favorite student, an actor who first played in the cinema of Vladimir Lenin. There is a version that it was for this ideological reason that the school became Schukinsky, and not Vakhtangovsky. Continue reading
